Forth Wanderers History

The Wanderers

WAS THIS THE BEST?

The club started in 1907. There are not many kicking around" from the first game. The colours in these early days were red and black In 1920 the juniors stepped down to juvenile status. The team in these days was termed by my researcher a team of "Brushers". This being in the 1921 strike There are not so many "brushers" now in the Forth. These were usually big heavy men who blasted the rock to make the roadways in the pit. Their big success was going to the eighth round of the Scottish Cup against Oribiston Celtic - a Bellshill team after a replay Orbiston narrowly defeated Forth, to go into the semi-final. In 1922 there was a two tier system comprising first and second division. During that year Forth played Longriggend five times before the tie was settled.

These early games were played at the Pleasure Park, but in 1929 they moved to Hie Dyke. The team stripped in the Inn and 'loosened up" to the field. The first ever game at Kingshill Park was in 1934. Forth played against Carluke Rovers. Some of the great names with the club were Bob Moffat, Jake McKendrick John Hamilton, Rab Carruthers, Shilfie McMillan and now Stuart Smith, also old faithfuls like Tarn Mackie, Leekles, Wull Gray and Rab Storrie to mention a few.

Arguments ever rage over what was the finest team. Old worthies go for the Bailie team. (A great team which Bob Moffat built round the Wanderers best ever player, Baillie?). Unfortunately this great team didn't bring home the goods. Their one moment of glory was defeating the great Glasgow Strathdyde in the Scottish Cup.

Now for the boys in the picture, surely the best ever team? If ever there was anything like the great train robbery, it was Lochgelly dismissing the boys after two games. They were on course for big things, thirteen buses followed to Lochgelly.

In recent days Shilfie McMillan took them closest in the Scottish, loosing to Pollock one game from the final. Rab Carruthers did it in the Lanarkshire Cup.

Great groundsman we must remember, Wull Whiteford and Bill Colville. Baillie, Bobby Hunter, Bert McMorran, Jim McCafferty were stars but surely they must bow to W. Waddell who put Forth on the map.

We wish the present committee good success.
